Songs about Cities: Chicago Edition

Forgive me, friends. I was up late last night finishing my last undergraduate assignment ever. (Also finishing the last episode in the final season of The Wire with my housemates, a series we started in September. Arguably, this has been one of the highlights of senior year, and certainly one of the most reassuring constants.) So, after last weeks intense policy discussion, I give you a quick post: a round-up of five phenomenal songs about a city. Today’s city is Chicago.

1. I wrote my thesis about Kanye West (and Jay-Z and black liberation theology) so needless to say, I’ve heard this song a dozen times in the last few months. Here’s Kanye’s “Homecoming” about his hometown, Chicago.

2.  “Jesus Just Left Chicago” by ZZ Top

3.  “Chi-City” by Common

4. Maybe this is fudging it a bit, but I couldn’t leave out one of my favorite tracks by the band named after the city: “Make Me Smile” by Chicago.

5. And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include: “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens. (Yes they are wearing wings in the music video.)
